ABOUT BEVERLY HILLS, CA
Before the glitz and glamor, Beverly Hills started off as a failed exploration site that yielded water instead of oil. Its natural beauty and strategic suburban development, however, more than made up for what it lacked in liquid gold.
A legendary oasis In Southern California
Before the Spanish explorers arrived, the area that we know as Beverly Hills used to be an oasis for the Native American Tongva people. They referred to it as the “Gathering of the Waters,” a fertile land in the middle of a semi-arid basin.
The earliest record of the area was in 1838, when the Mexican governor of California granted the land – known as El Rodeo de las Aguas – to Maria Rita Valdez Villa, an African-Latina widow. She established and ran a prosperous cattle and horse ranch for several decades before it was ambushed in 1852.
Although she survived, this event may have caused her to sell the land to Benjamin D. Wilson and Henry Hancock in 1854. Unfortunately, a drought soon dried up the water in the area, making it unfit for livestock for several years.
Establishing Beverly Hills
Sporadic droughts made it difficult to sustain any ranch, farm, or developments in the area until the early 20th century, when Burton Green and his partners bought the land in an attempt to find oil. Their wells failed to strike oil, but they did draw more than enough water to power a town. They renamed their company as the Rodeo Land and Water Company, with Green naming the area “Beverly Hills” after Beverly Farms in Massachusetts.
Renowned landscape architect Wilbur D. Cook was enlisted to create the master plan for the community in 1907. He was the brains behind Santa Monica Park and Beverly Hills’ picturesque, tree-lined boulevards and main streets, including Rodeo, Canon, Crescent, Carmelita, Elevado, and Lomitas.
The Beverly Hills Hotel, built in 1912, became the center of community life. Not only did it provide accommodation for tourists, but it also housed the town’s theater, meeting place, and even a church. Beverly Hills’ rapid development drew more and more residents to the area, leading to its official incorporation in 1914.
Economic growth and the Glamor Era
In the 1920s, Beverly Hills experienced a surge in residential development as Hollywood stars sought sophisticated and glamorous lifestyles. Celebrities like Douglas Fairbanks and Mary Pickford transformed a hunting lodge into their famous mansion, PickFair, which inspired others like Gloria Swanson and Charlie Chaplin to build stylish homes in the area. The rise in auto races and the construction of the Los Angeles Speedway also added to Beverly Hills’ allure and popularity.
After World War II, the city’s soaring economy led to its development of upscale living and luxury shopping destinations. Top-tier retailers established themselves in the Golden Triangle, a shopping mecca that attracted high-end shoppers from all over the world. Since the district is anchored by Rodeo Drive, it also cemented Beverly Hills’ reputation as the ultimate shopping destination.

The famous Electric Fountain, which features a sculpture of a kneeling Tongva native in prayer, pays homage to the city’s roots in Native American history as a wellspring of abundance and fertility. Places like the Paley Center for Media, the 9/11 Memorial, and the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts also added to the city’s heritage and commitment to the arts.
